Bits with fixed side parts should always be chosen one size smaller than bridles, as their optimal effect is achieved when the side parts are relatively close to the corner of the mouth. This allows the bit to lie still in the horse's mouth and an additional lateral effect can be achieved

 When you pick up the reins, the middle piece rolls gently over the middle part of the horse's tongue due to its distinctive shape, also called an olive, thus stimulating its sense of touch. The connecting rings to the middle piece roll gently over the tongue without exerting pressure.
